Howard Stringer: PLAYSTATION Network Overhaul

Head Honcho/CEO of Sony, Howard Stringer, has spoke at a recent speech to investors in Tokyo, Japan. He spoke of upgrading the PLAYSTATION Network and increase the connectivity between the console and other devices.

He stated that a network overhaul will be open to third-party developers and is launching on April 1, 2008. April is in Spring, which is also PLAYSTATION Home's release. Stringer states that the PLAYSTATION 3's network overhaul "puts us in the direct line of Apple and Microsoft".

Could this be PLAYSTATION Home coming, or could Sony be redoing the whole system? Meaning, game invites, gamerscore, and such? Only time will tell.

I think the gamerscore, game invites and such is something they're going to do no matter what. But what I think they plan on doing is expanding on this and other ideas beyond what the competition is doing.

I think that theory holds water because Sony decided, almost at the last minute, to delay Home because it wasn't up to the standards they wanted it to be. And with more time in the oven it has to develop and be a better "product" when it's finally released.

I'm hoping that Sony is getting ideas from developers on what they would like to see and how they can integrate that into their games. If they're not doing that they're doing themselves a great disservice.

I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it, 2008 WILL be the year of the PS3. There's so much coming out and so much to look forward to that the other systems pale in comparison.

Don't believe me? Name one, just ONE thing that's huge that's coming to the 360 or the Wii that's expected to be a show stopper. Halo 3. Out. Mario Galaxy. Out. Other than another Zelda game there's nothing in the pipeline for either MS or Nintendo that can compete with the kind of exclusive announcements and technology coming to the PS3.

It's a great time to be a PS3 owner.
