Burnout Paradise: Motorbikes, Community Features, and Planes Coming

Today is one hell of a day for gaming, first those Grand Theft Auto IV videos and now this. Today Criterion announced some new details about their 'Cagney' update coming soon to Burnout Paradise after the 'Bogart' update (only about a day a way). Lets take a look at what 'Cagney' will include.
  • Custom Routes are no longer featured in competition races - you can choose from 40 predefined Paradise Drives that Criterion have sanctioned, 7 of which came from fans.
  • Sanctioned Routes have their own Time Leaderboards - so you can all see who’s the fastest per route.
  • Traffic can no longer be switched off in competition races
  • No more ‘rounds’ in competition racing - many players disconnect, when they feel like there's no chance of winning, so they've got rid of the concept of rounds.
  • Cars can be grouped by Boost Rating - limiting to Boost Level 3 cars, for example, still gives you 10 massively varied cars but they'll all be pretty closely matched for great racing.
  • Car Select now appears after the Race Route has been selected - the host can't make sure they're the only one who knows the route, and now everyone gets a chance to choose an appropriate car.
  • The host can't kick other players any more
  • Grid position is based on player ranking
  • Full Boost Bars
  • Rank and Ranking Points are displayed in game
  • New map icons differentiate the Start and Finish points
We've seen all this already from the Criterion website, so what else will be coming with the update? For starters, some new start up screens and logos. As you launch the game, you will see a streamign player and game news with all the newest updates from the Criterion website. The page will also feature local time, Paradise City weather (along with real cities), a caldendar, and some hints and such for the game.

The Calendar featured on the page will be a reminder of what events are going to occur in the online community of Bunrout Paradise. Every weekend from July, there is going to be a Burnout Paradise event, some events will involve new cars. Criterion said some of these new cars will not have boost, although. You need to use your skills under standard conditions. You can get cars that will never be offered again with this update.

The update will also bring in Custom Soundtracks for the PlayStation 3. They will also be remixing all the sounds and music in the game, and add sirens to the police cars.

They also said that 70 new freeburn challenges are coming with the Cagney update, and they will be adding even more challenges throughout the year. There will be leaderboards for these challenges as well.

The 'Cagney' updaet should be coming at the end of June 2008.

Wait, there is more. Criterion has another update after 'Cagney' planned called 'Betty Davis', which should be out during the end of July 2008. This one is going to be the first 'you need to buy it' add-on.

This update is going to include, for the first time in any Burnout title, motorbikes. The update will let you drive around Paradise City at night as well, with less traffic at night, just as in real life.

Finally, there is one more thing not scheduled for any updates just yet, and that is planes. Criterion is not sure whether planes are coming to the game this year, but how could you not be excited about this. It's like Grand Theft Auto without the shooting.

[Live from Paradise; Criterion announce motorbikes, community features and planes!]

Update: Criterion has updated their site with a new direct-feed screenshot of a motorbike in-game at night (see above). They say bikes will feature their own game modes, challenges and even some new locations tailored to fit their unique performance and handing characteristics. The Betty-Davis motorbike update should arrive in August 2008.

Burnout Paradise: Three New Game Modes Revealed Coming Soon

Criterion Games will be expanding Burnout Paradise as the months go on, even after it has been out so long. They are going to release three new game modes soon.

Jino Talens from EA notes that "this is just the start – we aim to bring you many new Freeburn game modes covering different themes and play styles. Over the next 12 months, we're going to transform the Burnout Paradise you know and love into the Burnout Paradise you only ever dreamed of!" Thats a lot of months, a year. Can they pull it off?

Lets take a look at the new gameplay modes below.

Online Road Rage
  • This is an 8-player online team event.
  • At the start, everyone chooses their team (red or blue).
  • One team of "runners" has to drive to a checkpoint then the finish – they can only see one checkpoint ahead.
  • The other team has to take them down. These guys can see the checkpoint and finish and choose whether to wait and ambush in key locations, shortcut to the action if they get left behind or just follow the pack and cause chaos.
Online Marked Man
  • We randomly choose a "Marked Man".
  • There's an intense few moments, while all players wait for the selection to be made – you want to stay close to other players, so you can hit the Marked Man, as soon as he's selected but far enough away that that you can run like hell if it's you that's the Marked Man.
  • The target is selected and a 90 second timer starts – you get 1 point if you survive and 1 point if you take down the Marked Man. After 90 seconds a new Marked Man is selected at random.
  • If you're the Marked Man, you can't see the attacking players on the map, your car is a little slower and you don't get boost.
  • The session usually consists of around 10-12 minutes of intense gameplay depending on the number of players involved.
Online Stunt Run
  • This is 8-player simultaneous online Stunt Run – everyone competes for the highest score within the 2 minute time limit and you can play anywhere in Paradise City.
  • An on-screen display shows all player scores, so you can easily see how you're doing.
  • Earn multipliers for taking each other out but you lose your combo score, if you're taken down.
  • Eliminated players are greyed out of the scoring area but can exact brutal revenge by chasing after players that have managed to keep their combos alive beyond the time-out.
  • For the first time, you can drive alongside someone as they complete a billion score in Stunt Run - you can absolutely use this mode to try and show off to your friends.
They really seem to be bringing on the content, and for that we thank them. Now we just need to snag ourselves a copy. Hey Criterion, do you hear us?

Major Burnout Paradise Update Coming April 24, 2008

Criterion Games' website listed a new update for Burnout Paradise coming April 24, 2008. The update is codenamed "Bogart", and it addresses the top concerns of the game's community. The full list can be seen below.

* PS3 game can crash when a player is taken down and the player that has performed the Takedown leaves the game.
* The game indefinitely displays “Connecting to Paradise City Servers” if it’s having problems communicating with the rebroadcast server.
* Disconnecting the controller before a race begins can mean that race timings can be manipulated with players who didn’t cross the line first being awarded the win.
* Repeatedly joining and leaving a game with 8 players can cause the game to hang.
* Hammering the A (360) or X (PS3) after unlocking a car can cause the game to hang.
* East Crawford and Watt St achievements cannot be achieved if the player goes online and sets road rules before attempting them.
* Audio distortion when using 5.1 / DTS and looking back at the car.
* Enhanced 360 streaming performance stops instances where the game seems to pause for a second or so.
* Total time driven in player stats would stick at 145 hours.
* VoIP connection problems with 8 player games. This is now live on the Paradise City servers.

The update also adds the following game experience enhancements:

* We fixed Head-on Takedowns as these seemed generally unfair and unrealistic. Unfair low speed Takedowns have now been eradicated.
* Increase online race timer timeout so players have a greater chance of finishing the race.
* Fix drifting bug when drifting and boosting. There wasn’t any real control on the brake so players would grind around the walls of the corners. Giving you all better control of the car.
* Stabbing the boost has too much of a jerky behaviour in the car handling, when in Stunt Run.
* Surround sound fix - Centre speaker was 4dB louder, ruining the mix. The speech has now been positioned correctly.
* Increase the # of search results returned for online games.
* Increase Picture Paradise timer so it doesn’t kick in so quickly.
* Post event ticker commentary is not now displayed for disconnected players.
* Show player the number of Complete Challenges easily by listing X/50 in the Challenges menu.

Other high priority issues that have been fixed:

* Instances where Barrel rolls were not registering correctly in Stunt Run.
* Takedowns online were not counting towards the Total Takedowns.
* Some instances where Revenge Rivalries desync & don’t get fixed until players are updated online.
* Some instance where the Host couldn’t change the game access if the game was created through an invite.
* Online challenge issues where the challenge couldn’t be completed if it was started at the exact time that a player left the game.
* Incorrect rivalry updates when European players played against English or Japanese players. Online connection issues.
* Rich presence on 360 didn’t change correctly when there is a change in the game parameters.
* Instances where Friends were not being displayed on the mini map.
* Some online race start points face the players in the wrong direction.

EA: Skate, Burnout, & Mass Effect Extensions Coming

Electronic Arts plans to bring in some "extensions" for it's Skate and Burnout series says Electronic Arts president Frank Gibeau. He also states a sequel for Mass Effect is in the works as well, but did not state which consoles.

What could the Skate extension be? The developers already stated they built the game with no DLC in mind. We will find out sooner or later.

Burnout Paradise: Experience DLC Without Paying For It

Electronic Arts confirmed today that the Burnout Paradise downloadable content will be able to be seen in an online game even if you don't have it. Unlike other games that restrict you from playing with that person if they don't have that content.

“Crucially we also didn’t want to split the playing community between those that have updated data and those that don’t. We saw this as vital in maintaining simplicity to all online users; different players having different content packages wouldn’t be able to play online with each other.”

It's good that they plan on this. We woulnd't want to not be able to play with a friend just because they have content we don't.

“It’s our intention to extend the life of Burnout with additional DLC in the near future. As mentioned, we don’t want to split the online community between those that have content and those that don’t. Our intention is to offer both free and paid for DLC in a way that enables everyone to ’see’ the content, even if they have not paid for it,” said an EA representative in an e-mailed statement.

Burnout Paradise Online Demo Extended to February 15, 2008

What was originally supposed to go off today is extended to February 15, 2008.

Electronic Arts decided to extend the online portion of the Burnout Paradise demo on the PLAYSTATION Store.

"As you may know, Burnout Paradise is built to provide the ultimate in freedom and discovery online and offline. The demo did a terrific job of providing players a taste of that.

"Seeing how the social online multiplayer gameplay is such a huge part of Burnout Paradise, we've decided to keep the multiplayer demo functionality on for a bit longer," the spokesperson said.

You still have around two weeks if you haven't already got into the demo. I highly recommend giving it a download.

Burnout Paradise: Your Questions Answered

On the official Burnout Paradise site, one of the game developers wishes us a Merry Christmas and answers some questions.

In regards to the internet feedback of the demo, it was made after the work on Burnout Paradise was complete, so they are not tuning the game to your feedback.

He goes to say they think they made the best demo all year to be released, and you can't capture the full game in a single demo.

For all people making comparisons, the game is Burnout, not that other game.

On the city size, he writes that it was built to handle Burnout gameplay, meaning crahses, jumps, fighting, stunts. Its a bit smaller than other games, but it features twice the framerate, no loading, and more gameplay.

He believes Burnout is the best because they created something new thats never been done before.

About online customization, he says that it's deep. The custom routes are very well done, and you can create any type of race you want.

He ends it by saying "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone here at Criterion Games".

Burnout: PS3 Crash Compilation

GamerSyde received a new Burnout Paradise video from one of their members showing his best crashes in this new crash compilation video. The video is running on the PLAYSTATION 3 version of the title at 60fps.
