KILLZONE 2 PlayStation Day 2008 Trailer, European Release Date

Here is the new KILLZONE 2 trailer from Sony's PlayStation Day 2008. Once again, as the previous trailers, we are nothing but amazed. Sony is really dishing them out today. Enjoy!

Unfortunately, however, we do get one bad thing from this and that is KILLZONE 2's pushed release date. It is now set to release in February 2009, as it's official release date. However, this delay is only for Europe.

Update: Removed too for some reason. Here is YouTube.

KILLZONE 2 to be at PlayStation Day 2008

It is going to be one hell of an event tomorrow for PlayStation Day, as Insomniac has confirmed already that Resistance 2 will be at the event, and today they've confirmed that KILLZONE 2 will also be there as well. They confirmed this when a disappointed NeoGAF member wrote "no killzone 2 guys....." and Insomniac's James Stevenson replied with a "Wrong." We are getting excited.

Life-Size KILLZONE 2 Helghast on eBay

If you have over $500 to spare and want to own a life-size KILLZONE 2 Helghast statue, then this is your auction. On eBay, we see a 6 foot-tall Helghast statue holding a removable STA-52 LAR (Light Assault Rifle). He comes disassembled for easier shipping, and is quite good for home protection. Take a look at the link below.

PSM3's Insider Talk for Issue 100: Godfather II, New KILLZONE 2 Footage, More

The latest issue of UK's PSM3 contains a bunch of new insider information (remember: that equals rumors) discussing games such as a new Shellshock, The Godfather II, and more. Lets take a look.

  • Guerilla's Vietnam Shooter Shellshock is set to get a sequel. The sequel will be more of a psychological horror than action.
  • The Godfather II is very much 'go', and is rumored to contain 'investigation' segments.
  • Iron Man is set to appear in Sega's Incredible Hulk, with the big green guy returning the favor in Iron Man.
  • Activision have trademarked the name DJ Hero, this could mean a Guitar Hero style game but with a DJ Deck.
  • Free Radical are working on a new LucasArts Game which is rumored to be Star Wars Battlefront 3.
  • Midways game adaptation on the film The Wheelman is still on its way. Details for the game are due late April.
  • Midway are working on a sequel to Stranglehold. More than likely starring Chow Yun-fat.
  • SEGA is supposedly making a Alien RPG. The guys working on it are Obsidian, the same people who are also making the spy game Alpha Protocol.
  • THQ have retired the game series Juiced after cutbacks.
  • More KILLZONE 2 footage will be shown to a select audience (including PSM3) to prove that the E3 2005 footage featuring the breathless rocket launcher sequence as you squad barks orders in real time, can actually be done on the PS3.
  • Konami will be making Metal Gear merchandise. This will include a duck egg-timer that will feature in Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear T-shirts.
I'm definitely excited about The Godfather II and seeing this new KILLZONE 2 footage. The DJ Hero game sounds interesting as well.

April Fools Watch: “Killzone: Wrath of Hakha” Unveiled

Supposedly, a new PlayStation Network game is coming called KILLZONE: Wrath of Hakha in May 2008. The game will resolve around Hakha, and how he came to change sides in the war.

The game is to use a modified version of KILLZONE: Liberation's gameplay, with up to twenty Helghast on screen. The game is to be supported with DLC as well, with a few episodes coming out before KILLZONE 2's release.

Take it with a grain of salt, once again people.

New KILLZONE 2 Trailer Was Not Shown at Play.com Live 2008

When Three Speech posted a list of the games at the Play.com Live event at Wembley Stadium, KILLZONE 2 was one of them marked with trailer. Unfortunately, the trailer shown was an the same trailer from before.

A Sony PR spoke on this saying "SCEA very rarely brings software to someone else's event. Typically, we create an event and invite media/consumers to play the various products."

More PSN Integration: KILLZONE 2 Official Website

Somethings going on over at the PlayStation Network. First the Sony EU forums were integrated, and now the official KILLZONE website is as well. Straight from the KILLZONE Command Center.

"Killzone.com is currently undergoing important changes behind the scenes. We're joining forces with the PLAYSTATION®Network to offer you new and exciting functionality. To take full advantage of future upgrades to the website, and to preserve your current profile, please link your Killzone.com account to your PLAYSTATION®Network account. It's a simple one-time procedure:

If you DO have a PLAYSTATION®Network account:

1. Sign in to your Killzone.com account.
2. When the dialog box prompts you to link your accounts, click on "yes".
3. Sign in to your PLAYSTATION®Network account.

If you DON'T have a PLAYSTATION®Network account:

1. Sign in to your Killzone.com account.
2. When the dialog box prompts you to link your accounts, click on "sign up here" to open the sign-up form in a new window.
3. Follow the instructions to create a new PLAYSTATION®Network account.
4. Return to the previous window and click on "yes".
5. Sign in to your PLAYSTATION®Network account.

You're done! Click on "OK" to return to Killzone.com."
Hmm. Like I've said in the EU forums post, this is probably all in preparation for the big April PlayStation Network overhaul.

Rumor: New KILLZONE 2 Trailer at Play Live Event?

Three Speech has posted a list of the PlayStation 3 and PSP titles to be featured at the Play.com Live event in the UK. One of the listing is KILLZONE 2 with the word 'trailer' next to it.

  • Echochrome - playable code
  • KILLZONE 2 - trailer
  • LittleBigPlanet - trailer

KILLZONE 2: Mathijis, The Third Faction

It seems that KILLZONE 2 will feature more than just the ISA and Helghast. In a recent preview for the title in The Official PlayStation Magazine UK, they reveal Mathijis, a third faction present in the game.

We don't know if the Mathijis will be helping the ISA, Helghast, or a side all their own. When we find out more, we will be sure to inform you.

KILLZONE 2 Beta Coming 2008

We've all been wanting to know when the beta for KILLZONE 2 is coming. The game dazzled us at E3 2007, but all we really want to do is play it.

Earlier this year, Guerilla Games' lead tester, Seb Downie confirmed that fact earlier this year on KILLZONE 2's official forums:

"Of course there is going to be a public beta. I have always said that any game that has an online mode needs to go through a public beta to ensure it works as intended,"
We've all been waiting for this Beta, hoping it would hit us in 2007, but sadly, it's not happening this year. So in order to find out what was going on with the beta, PSU contacted SCEA's Alex Armour to get an update on the situation.
"We are hoping to do a beta but I don't think we'll have anything ready before this year is over... it is something we are working on for next year,"
Hopefully, the KILLZONE 2 beta will follow a mid-2008 release with full support of PLAYSTATION Home.

Killzone 2 Tech Director Talks Rendering Technics

Last week at Killzone.com, Guerrilla Games posted an interview with Killzone 2’s Technical Director, Michiel van der Leeuw. Part two of the interview is live and ready for your reading pleasure.

Michiel sheds some light on the rendering technics behind Killzone 2 and explains why they decided to take that development approach. He also gives his candid views on the Internet “Hype Train”.

Continuing on from last week’s interview, this week Guerrilla technical director Michiel van der Leeuw talks about Killzone 2’s reception at E3 2007, his plans for the future, and the arcane art of deferred rendering. What is it? What’s so special about it? Read on to find out!

‘Deferred rendering’ seems to be the buzzword of the moment. What is it, and how does it differ from normal rendering techniques?

Well, a deferred rendering engine separates lighting from drawing geometry. In a traditional forward renderer, you run a pixel shader to sample the material properties (the texture, reflection, et cetera), add the influences from all of the lights, and write out the complete pixel. In a deferred renderer you write out the surface properties (texture, specular intensity, et cetera) first, and then perform lighting on the pixels in screen-space.

KILLZONE 2: Interview: Michiel van der Leeuw (Part 1)

Few people at Guerrilla Games know the ins and outs of the Killzone 2 engine as well as technical director Michiel van der Leeuw does. Killzone.com caught up with the veteran games developer to chat about his views on Killzone 2, the PlayStation 3, and what working at Guerrilla is like. The first half of this interview is presented here; check back next week for part 2.

What’s your current role within Guerrilla? What are your chief responsibilities?

I am currently Technical Director at Guerrilla. I go around putting my nose into everybody's business – especially if their business has anything to do with workflow, engine features, or new ideas. My main responsibilities include running the eight-man tech team and overseeing the four-man tools team. I also make sure that the engine technology we have is suitable for our game. My team and I mostly deal with the engine side, which includes graphics and sound, as well as the technology used by the other coders to get their work to run properly on PlayStation 3.

In the end, I'm the fall guy if our game gets low grades for frame drops or something like that. If our team delivers a smooth-running, gorgeous-looking product, I avoid getting hurt.
