Sony Japan Releases Official PSP Theme Maker

Japan's official PlayStation site has just updated with a new downloadable zip folder, that is a PSP Theme Maker for their newest firmware. It's an official release of Sony's very own theme maker for handhelds running on their official firmware.

While details are still sketchy at this point (it's all in Japanese), a quick scan of this new application's PDF manual reveals some interesting details. For example, we've spotted screenshots for what appears to be a custom icon editor (complete with step-by-step instructions). The app also carries its own theme converters, although once again, we can't verify this until we can pick up a more proper translation.

Hopefully a North American version of this will be released of this soon for those wanting their own custom themes. If you want to check it out, visit the link below.

Final Fantasy XIII: New Details

We have a few new details about Final Fantasy XIII & Final Fantasy Versus XIII. We have a scanned article translated:

  • The city inside of Cocoon was shown in the new trailer.
  • The new FF13 girl is quite different than other girls in the series so it's hard to get her into balance.
  • Nomura said the latest Versus 13 trailer finally caught up to the original image he had always wanted to go with. Two new characters even showed up but everything might be reset by the end of the year.* The main character's design has always been a temporary design anyway so his real self will be revealed sometime next year. (MAJISSUKA)
  • The plains and towns are following the image of Italy. The text that showed up in the trailer was also Italian.
  • For now Agito 13 looks pretty tame compared to the main 13 and Versus 13 but a bigger revelation will be done next year.
Thats about it! Enjoy.

GameSpot Reviews NBA 07 a 5/10

GameSpot recently reviewed Sony's NBA 08. They gave it a low 5 out of 10. They stated:

"NBA 07 for the PlayStation 3 was a mess, clearly rushed out the door to make it to stores in time for the PlayStation 3's launch. SCEA has had 10 months to straighten things out for NBA 08--not a lot of time in the world of game development. There's no question that this year's game is better than last year's, but its gameplay is so laden with problems that it's still not worth your time."

Gran Turismo HD to be Removed from Japan's Playstation Store

Sony has announced that the free game, Gran Turismo HD Concept, will be removed from the Playstation Store in Japan after September 30th.

The Japanese site for the game will also stop listing the rankings at that time, but the in-game ranking system will still continue to work fine.

Apparently, this is in preparation for the release for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue later this year. Basically, if you’re in Japan, and you haven’t already downloaded the game, you better get it soon. No word yet on if the U.S. store will do the same.

G4TV: Big Announcement Delayed

Unfortunately, that so called "big announcement" that was supposed to be told today on G4TV's Attack of the Show! was delayed. More news as it comes. Here is the statement from Attack of the Show!:

Um…. sorry. We know we’ve been hyping a big surprise all week and there’s been a ton of speculation as to what it could be. Some thought we’d start broadcasting in 720p, while others believed it had something to do with the launch of Halo 3. Good guesses, but neither of them is correct and though we can’t tell you what the answer is, we can assure you that the announcement will be huge!

Ultimately, the delay is the result of a legal thing that we honestly thought would be worked out by now. You know how it is, the lawyers in the fancy suits with the big briefcases have to cross every "T" and dot every "I" before anybody can do anything.

Don’t worry everything’s still happening, just not today. Be patient. The surprise will be worth the wait and we’re sure it will make a lot of you very happy. Again, we’re sorry.

Sony Submits New PS3 Model to FCC

Straight from IGN.

Adding more fuel to the rumor that Sony is planning to release a new PlayStation 3 model soon, a new FCC filing surfaced today showing that the company has submitted a new unit to the agency for testing.

First reported by the technology site DailyTech, news of the filing rippled throughout the intertubes Thursday, leading to more speculation that Sony is planning to release a 40 GB PS3 before the holidays. Much of the information about the model is blocked from public view at Sony's request, but a label image posted on the FCC web site contains the PlayStation 3 logo and includes the model number CECHG01, which is consistent with past PlayStation 3 model numbering (the 60 GB units carries the number CECHA01 and the 80 GB unit's number is CECH01).

According to documentation filed with the FCC by Sony, the new model will have 802.11b/g wi-fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and the same system specs as its siblings (3.2GHz CPU, etc.). Hard drive space is not mentioned in the filing, and although the FCC only mentions testing two USB ports, the documents do now show how many total USB ports, I/O ports and card readers are built into the unit.

Recent speculation that Sony would slash the price of the PlayStation 2 to $99 and release a slimmed-down $399 40 GB PS3 fizzled a bit when no such announcements were made this month at the Tokyo Game Show.

Was Sony waiting for its competitor's Halo 3 buzz to die down before making an announcement? Is the new PS3 SKU actually a model with a larger hard drive and a coffeemaker attachment? Only time, and Sony, will tell.
