We at onAXIS like to do these kind of articles for some reason, hoping maybe someone will see this and take action upon it. This article is going to go very in-depth, so keep with it.

Okay, first, lets start off with interface, below we have the interface for the PlayStation Network, and the interface for Xbox Live.
Xbox Live: Now, if you take a look, Xbox Live lists "Messages, Friends, and Chat" usually with an ad under Xbox Live when logged online showcasing a new download or game on the Marketplace.
PlayStation Network: While the PlayStation 3 lists the friend addition, blocking, and message box, all under one XMB icon. That is something about the PlayStation Network interface, it lacks a certain feel of things. Now I own both consoles, and I love my PlayStation 3, but when I log on to Xbox Live, it feels complete. When I log onto my PlayStation 3, it feels like a revamped version of PlayStation 2 online, very bland and such.
MARKETSTORESonline
Xbox Live: The Xbox Live Marketplace is displayed the same on every television, even those crappy small SDTV's that your uncle gave to you after he threw out his PSone that you dug out the trash to play on that TV.
PlayStation Network: The PlayStation Store displays differently depending on which sort of television you have. If you have an SDTV, it will display with only 4 selections and no right panel.
Xbox Live: The Xbox Live Marketplace is always full of ads, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Most of the ads give benefit toward you, as they show the latest games, movies, tv shows, etc. Another thing about the Marketplace is, is that it is very organized, it has sections for everything. The demos can be categorized by genre, name, date, etc. They have Bringing It Home during special events, and they don't update on one specific day.
This Marketplace also has Video on Demand, which means TV downloads, Movie downloads, and such.
The interface is very easy to browse through, and there is no waiting times to see information about a game.
PlayStation Network: The PlayStation Store, it updates every Thursday of the week. It's "featured items" also known as new arrivals are shown on the store front upon entering. The store is based upon a browser web-page which makes browsing through the store a hassle. The only organization in the store is category organization, or full story alphabetically.
Sony needs to majorly revamp the store interface, and take it off a web-page, and release it in the 2.00 update.
Sadly, it has no video on demand.
Due to having an SDTV, some users of the Network might not be able to see the two ads, which are usually the same for a long time until being changed. The ads are usually only for games, as well.
COMMUNITYgamers
Xbox Live: Lets now take a look at the community, because thats what online is really all about. With Xbox Live, talking to your friends, cross-game inviting them, voice chatting them, video chatting them, and instant messaging them is all at the click of a button (the (X) button).
PlayStation Network: On the PlayStation 3, in order to get to your friends list, you must exit your game to do so. There is no in-game voice chat, or cross-game/in-game invites. Soon will come an XMB update, but unless they add the above, we will only have access to our friends list. Quite disappointing.Xbox Live: On the Xbox 360, each user has their own unique profile, with their recently played games, personal slogan, gamerscore, achievments, and such. There are also usually many events sponsored by Microsoft, along with e-mails for free game redemption codes and such.
PlayStation Network: On the PlayStation 3, a user has a profile with an icon, a small about me section, and a section of what languages you speak, which cannot even be viewed in-game. The PlayStation 3 sports no sort of achievements, but sports Home soon enough. The PlayStation Network also never really has any Sony sponsored events.PlayStation Home will be a great community, with interactive areas, game integration and what not. But some think that Home may not be the ultimate experience, what if you want to do all that you can do in Home, outside it? If you get what I'm saying.
ONLINEplay
Lets take a look at online play, the PlayStation Network has an advantage here, it's online is free. Xbox Live's online play costs around $60 a year, just for online play though, while all else is free.
Both: Now, the only difference here is that the online play on Xbox Live sports all the features listed above, while the PlayStation Network simply just has the play, but no private voice chat, in-game friend checking, messaging, profile editing, or cross-game/in-game invites, etc. When your in games at all, you can do most the system settings you can do from the dashboard, like change themes, view the active downloads, etc.
Xbox Live: If you start up a game such as Halo 3, and there is an update for that game, you'll get a message on start-up before the game even loads saying there is an update available. You download it quick, the system restarts, and your done.
PlayStation Network: If you start up a game such as Resistance, and there is an update for that game, you have to let it load up, go to online, accept the agreement, then it will state an update is available. The update takes around 10 minutes to download and then it prompts you to restart the system yourself, and reload up the game and go back to the online.
ONLINEsites
Xbox Live: Xbox Live features it's own way to stay connected, and thats by going to their official website (xbox.com). There you can do all the community features you can do on your Xbox 360.
PlayStation Network: The PlayStation Network however features no website and no way to display your online name, games played, etc.

If you want us to tell you the drastic truth, Xbox Live wins this match, and it will keep winning this match until Sony takes action and starts rolling out it's forces. I'm a big supporter of Sony, but facts don't lie, in fact, they can't talk.
I know the comments are going to be heating up with flames, but I guess that will be by sole supporters of one system only. I enjoy all my systems, but the PLAYSTATION 3 especially, and thats why I want it to start doing great.

jimi you gotta calm down. I have both systems and honestly Live murders the PS3 network. Unless you have used it you wouldn't know what they are talking about. The ability to invite friends mid-game or cross game is awesome. And live does have images... they are called themes. The ads are not obtrusive at all. And for the quality of the service it is worth paying. Just play Halo3 and look at all the cool things that Live extends. I could download
entire videos of games I have played online, take screenshots, post my own edited maps to Live. This is all in part to the Live service. I love Sony and have ever since the PS1 but MS has them beat on this.
Isn't PS3 coming out with a music store that they showed at gamer's week? Also, home will solve any question of which console has best start up menu.
I think the disclaimer should be, "While Sony has been doing this for less than a year and Microsoft has been doing it for like 5 years will skew this review".
People continue to compare XBL against Sony's "still growing" online community as though MS first developed XBL with the 360. Obviously they had to perfect the system from Xbox 1 to the 360.
Also consider that most of the all of the current features were not available at the beginning of the 360's lifecycle.
And just like games, the 360 didn't really hit its stride until October/November with titles like Lost Planet and Gears of War. The PS3 is hitting its own stride with Heavenly Sword, Ratchet, Uncharted, Unreal, Haze, and others. This is the BEST time to be a PS3 owner. And if Sony can hold onto its promises for Home, SingStar, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear 4, Gran Turismo V, Final Fantasy (both of them), the Dual Shock 3, and Killzone 2 next year is going to be a banner year for our favorite system.

I own both a PS3 and a 360. I like warhawk and resistance on my PS3 but the PS network is no where near where live is at. I hope it gets there and pushes MS to continue improving. The article hit a lot of points right on - now Halo3 or warhawk ... humm I love decisions like this.

This was an infromative article and I would just like to say that in most cases you will see that people will take sides in the XBOX vs PLAYSTATION war becuase they have only bought one of the two consoles first for what ever reason and it is understandable that people should defend their choice unless they decide to finally purchase both consoles like you did.
Anybody who still has not purchased a NEXT GENERATION console should read articles like this one in order to make the best educated decision as to which of the two consoles to purchase.
I was a proud owner of a ZX Spectrum, then an AMIGA 500, then entered naturaly into the PC gaming with WingCommander and Doom. I would have stayed in the PC Gaming realm if it was not for the fact that as a person who sits in front of a computer all day I came to loath coming home to relax sitting in front of a computer again so I decided to move on to the console world by buying an XBOX and I chose to buy ir becuase I wanted to play HALO. If you look at it from a "PC Gamer's" standpoint the game was specifically targeting me.
If you basically look at the stretegy MS has been following from the very begining you can see that their objective was always to tap into the PC gaming market where the comunity and the internet connectivity was tremendously important. What XBOX LIVE actually introduced was GAME independent comunications and comunity infarstructure that nearly resembled that of a PC.
MS LIVE, as they now call it, has changed and improved dramitaclly since the early XBOX days TODAY it runs on dedicated MS servers includes the popular MSN network which many PC users such as myself has connected all the time in my office; mind you I use KOPETE on my LINUX desktop.
In summry what PSN neads to follow, and assimilate the PC which is exactly what XBOX is trying to emulate and unify.
Another aspect that SONY I feel is getting wrong is that they are ADVERTISING the PS3 as a good BLUERAY HD player in order to justify the additional entry level costs of the PS3!?
Everything I am saying here is open to debate which I hope we can all learn a little more from since I am considering buying a PS3 as well...
If I remember correctly Home is going to be Ad Supported, and much more than Live. Why you may ask? Sony's gotta get paid. So prepare yourself for an onslaught of advertising with Home. I currently have both systems, and absolutely love Warhawk, but loathe the fact that I cannot bounce from game to game with my friends list. Or really the ability to add. I know they have a buddy list in game which is a positve step in the right direction, but let's make it universal to all games. Instead of having to code the game to look at the friends list.. just enable the PS3 to pull up the XMB like you can when you watch a slide show or video clip. With all those damn PROCS they should be able to code one of them to handle the XMB even with overhead.
To be honest.. this article is spot on. In the sense that the author laid out all the reasons why PSN falls short. They are not monumental goals, but should be addressed. Let's admit it, LIVE has spoiled us as gamers. When LIVE launched for Xbox 180 (I like to call it) it was a huge step in the console world. When the PS2 lauched it's service with the optional NIC.. it was just there, difficult to use, and inconvienent (SP?).
I guess my only real problem would be; yeah LIVE has been out for several years, but it's not like this is Sony's first attempt at a console. They had all that time to do some market research and analysis to see what gamers love and enjoy about LIVE. I think they were rushed and failed to deliver. Nothing personal against Sony (I have serveral products that I absolutely love), but make us happy. After all we are the future of Playstation.

I need to say one thing positve about the PSN service before I bid adue. As far as actual gaming is concerned, 32 ppl deathmatches lag free for the most part, stomps a mudhole in the ass of LIVE. I only wish that LIVE would setup some sort of peer to server network, instead of this peer to peer garbage. I mean you can't even have a 16 player Halo match without experiencing some difficulties. In this aspect.. Congrats PSN for thinking this part through.

There is a reason that psn is behind and not updating their network, they want you to be interested in HOME when it does come out. But then again, PSN does not sport any full movie, music video or tv show downloads, but the ps3 does have web browsing. So with everything that is already free to view on the web, do you think that PS3 users really need to DL items to watch. You can stream from youtube, or google. Check your email, myspace whatever at the same time. If you have an ipod, and who doesn't, you can just copy your songs and play it while surfing.

thats whats with PSHome, there may be a lot of ads, but it doesn't really disturb you much, does it?
Just a pointer with regards to the 32p death matches ... are you pooling from 650'000 players available players all with diferent abilities and game preferences from all over the world each with different connection types and ISPs.
Halo 3 is currently managing that kind of numbers all the time and it can take ages to get good matchup with people but after that the game is as smooth as ever.
Halo 2 and 3 both manged hability scores, player histories, player preferences, languages (H3 only) and tries to match players with similar habilities in order to maximize online game experience.
I would love to play 32 BIG BATTLE matches but I can understand that setting up one of these matches with so many variables would take bloody ages.
It would be good to know just how many people are connected on your 32 player games servers at one time in order to make a comparison.
The best possible solution really is trashing PSN or LIVE and use your own dedicated server call you 32 freinds or send them emails, coordinate a time basically leaving no room for improvisation.
I can ganrantee you that the LIVE servers are taking a much larger load than any of the SONY ones.
Well this is quite the narrow casted Blog. The blog and comments are forgetting a few points, mainly cultural ones.
First, north american PS3 users only make up 1/3 of all PS3s out there, and probably not all of them are conencted and using the online features, I don't think Sony is going to bend over backwards to ~1.1 Million users in terms of making the PSN exclusive for the North American Gamer. Unlike Microsoft, Sony doesn't have the choice of snubbing the Japanese Market.
I don't believe the Japanese gamer is at all entirely enthralled with online messaging as the NA gamer is, it's not entirely a priority. That's not to say it won't change, WarHawk has changed this, as will MGO.
Remember that Sony puts more thought into reaching a broader market rather than appealing to one market as Microsoft has, and so that's going to reflect in the over-all presentation of the networking features. Who knows it's too early to say that 'This is how it's going to be'.
XBL+ : Friendlist, Game-Invites are on XBL much better as on the PSN.
PSN+ : The Chat Audio is a little better as on XBL. You can share/stream own photos in a Chat too.
Well honestly...you have to think, who owns Xbox three sixty? Microsoft. Who created the internet? Microsoft. Of course they are going to be murdering anything thing online related lol. We should be proud that PS3 is even taking a stand against Microsoft in online play lol. Maybe Sony needs to collab with apple or something on a counter attack to Xbox 360. I have both the 360 and the PS3 and personally I feel that XBox Live, actually everything about the 360 to be bloated and crowded, the dashboard is messy and slow, filled with way too much junk... the controller is bulky and some buttons were just not meant to be pressed (start and select) amd overall not responsive (even compared to some old N64 controllers), Live itself tends to be slow in comparison to PSN (both are on the same network so that is not a factor) and also the console itself screams and cries for attention when its on those damn fans just ruin it... especially when compared to the quiet more powerfull ps3... actually even my laptop has more output... is smaller and makes less noise XD. So imho PS3 takes the cake and the ONLY thing the 360 has is a few games... (most of which still play WAY better on PC)

i do have to admit, PS3 is a "growing console" and is still in its first years of development. This ultimately means that the 360 has more experience in this industry. Home will be a new, Mii like community to boost up the the PS3 owner's spirits.
My friend has a 360, and he says that the ability to to access your friend list while playing Halo3 is very helpful. Yet, this year he got a PS3 because they ha better games(which i have to admit is not true, even though i have a PS3) He says it worth the while.
If u don't have either of the systems, there some things to think about:
Do u like playing online games?
Is HD movie quality a big thing(cause Blu ray kicks HD DVD in the ass)?
Do you care if you have to pay like $60 a yr.?
These should help u decide which one to get.

Xbox Live has so much more than PSN, though PSN is good, it's not as good as Xbox Live, you can buy games on both, but only Ps1 games on PSN, and whole Xbox Original games on LIVE. And 50$ per year is not much, it's like buying an expansion to all your video games and all your future video games for one year.

The ads are good, if a new game is released, it tells me, for example.
Burnout 3 takedown is released on LIVE.
I become happy, because i don't browse the marketplace too much, and thank Microsoft for this feature.

ummm first off, love the turducken refrence. I love the playstation and have since its release in this battle live is winning hands down at this point.
Not only does ingame access to features such as cross game invites and cross game voice chat make it a completly different gameplay inviroment, the online "on demand" features are outstanding.
I can play the 1989 Ninja turtles arcade game while simultaniously downloading the latest episodes of southpark and the newest demo for "Turning Point: The Fall of Liberty" all the while calling my friend and impotant dish rag over the voice comm.
To put it bluntly the sheer versatility of the xbl system is something that sony CAN and most likely WILL catch up with. But for now they are a three legged dog chasing a hare on pcp.

I do agree that XBL is a better online setup, it offers alot more, and it is much more "user friendly," but when I look at a system I also look at hardware. Will it crash, how do the graphics look, and what does the future of the system look like. I chose a PS3 because it didn't have the crash rate like that of the 360, the graphics look alot better, depending on the game, and Sony has been in my gaming life since the PS1.

In Game Invite and Chat means that my Teammates are going to Lose the match for me because their buddies just powered up their consoles and now their chatting. So to some extent the In game thing has bad points to. The Lack of it in PSN doesn't make it worth less than Live in my opinion.
PSN does 40 Players in Resistance, 32 in Warhawk. Most 360 games are 16, What am I Paying For???
My Huge Complaint Not Covered Here. On PSN everybody in my household can have his/her own Online Persona. This has become important since My Son and I play the Same Games. So on my 360 to Not have to share Stats and Buddy lists we would have to Pay $100 a year for Online service on 1 Console, That is B.S.

I think that this review is completely bias towards the xbox 360. You didn't mention any of it's flaws fairly. You completely under-exaggerated the fees for the xbox live service, making the playstation network seem pointless. Also, this review is only about the online experience. If you look at the two console's full features it's more of a fair fight seeing as the 360 is losing it's grip on the marke. You say you want the PS3 to do well but it is blatantly obvious you prefer the 360.

That is a major factor for you, so I can see how that would not fit your lifestyle. This comparison is more aimed toward the "Single player in the household", which makes up the majority of the customer market for nearly all consoles with the exception of the Wii. If you look at it as the article was aimed at you'll see that paying $50 a year is rather small (that's about 15 cents a day, I think someone would make more than that by taking 5 minutes to look for pennies on the street).

The PS3 also has a movie up-converter, making regular movies into blu-ray. The PS3 also just came out with MAG, more than just a gaylo type midless killing game. PS3 also has uncharted. The Xbox also requires you pay around $10 dollars a month for an Xbox live avvount. PSN is free. Lets not forget you foolish Xboxers, you probably get DLC, and that costs another $10. Lets say you only but 3 map packs, in 7 months, YAY! you've officialy past the price of a PS3, and why? You're stupid, thats why.

first of all banksboy Microsoft didn't invent the internet the government was the first ones to start using the internet and second Halo is actually probably one of the best games for this generation just because you say it isn't that good doesn't necessarilly make it true first the XBox 360 is outselling the PS3 right now and second Halo 3 sold 300 million copies in the first 12 days easily beating Nintendo's most popular game of 2007 WII Sports and it won best multiplayer game of 2007 I never hear anything that good about UC2 or KillZone only by raging fanboys I don't listen to them anyway
