Best Buy Discontinuing 80GB PLAYSTATION 3s

It seems that electronic retailer, Best Buy, are discontinuing the 80GB PLAYSTATION 3. A new e-mail to Best Buy employees confirms this. "The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time," it reads. "It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."

Currently, the 80GB is the only version that supports backwards compatibility, extra USB slots, and memory card slots as well. The 40GB version lacks those features.

Currently, the 40GB costs $399 and is the cheapest available. The 80GB costs $499. There has been rumors of the 40GB dropping to $299 with a new white model coming as well. The end of this e-mail states "At this time, Sony hasn't made any announcements about new products." The big words are "At this time". Seems Sony is in for some changes.

Don't get too excited. Using the words, "At this time" or "As of right now" or even "As far as we know" is normal for any company to say since they don't really know anything for certain.

Safer to say something soft like "at this time" rather than saying, "there are NO new products on the horizon" as Sony could drop a bomb at any time making them look pretty stupid if they said anything different.

As for BB selling ONLY the 40GB without the ability for consumers to choose the 60GB over the 40GB for backwards compatibility is kind of sad. But, with so many great games coming this year there's basically no worries about trying to keep your PS2 library alive.
