NCSoft to Reveal First Console MMO This Year

Chris Chung, the new president of NCSoft, spoke with Wired at the DICE Summit 2008. Chung talked about console MMOs and stated the company should have "something to announce--not only announce but to show--by the second half of this year. I'm pretty psyched about that."

When they talk about console MMOs, they obviously mean the PLAYSTATION 3, due to the fact they have a four game contract with Sony Computer Entertainment.

They could easily port titles like City of Heroes & City of Villains, Guild Wars, or Tabula Rosa. Chung, however, says "that's the wrong way to do it. You have to create a gameplay that's really suitable for the console space, the console experience. I mean, it's very different from PC."

Look forward to hear more about NCSoft's upcoming console MMO in the coming months. On another note though, keep in mind NCSoft is considering its "console specialist," is as the City of Heroes & City of Villains team.

NCSoft's Future Direction: Free to Play PLAYSTATION Network Titles

Dallas Snell, NCSoft's Director of Business Development, was interviewed by Free to Play on their Dungeon Runners title. Dungeon Runners is a free to play game, and NCSoft's future direction. Snell states:

"Further to NCSoft's recently announced plans to release free to play content on the Sony network, Dallas talked about his company's goal of becoming "device agnostic" in order to break down the segregation of gamers between platforms. NCsoft plans to build their own cross-platform community service, with friends lists, inter-game messaging, and other features similar to Xbox Live. NCsoft also intends to release desktop, facebook and mobile widgets to extend gamers' experience."

NCSoft: 4 Titles Initially Planned for PlayStation 3

Geoff Heath, NCSoft Europe's big boss talked to GamesIndustry.Biz about the deal that Sony announced at this years E3 2007. Everybody's been wondering what or how many titles they are actually planning on the PlayStation 3. Well, there are 4 titles planned. Here is a list of important points:

  • The deal has been in the works for a long time -- NCSoft has been seeking someone with the right technology and support to get into the console business. Plus, NCSoft likes how the PlayStation Store works.
  • Since NCSoft has a ton of games, they initially need to dilute their options down to about four to stick on the PS3. We think they'll expand on their biggest titles, like Guild Wars.
  • New titles that are created will be exclusive to the PS3 and only the PS3. Although, Heath admits, a PC version of whatever the title is will probably exist. There are no plans to bring any games to other consoles.
Me, personally, am hoping they make a modern day type MMO like Megami Tensei Online: IMAGINE or Persona 3. Or at least port of Aion from the PC to the PlayStation 3.
