Ryan Payton Soon to Announce Next Series of Metal Gear?

In the latest Kojima Pro Podcast, Ryan Payton and guest Mark MacDonald have made a little bet. The bet is that if the Packers win the football game on Saturday, Ryan will get permission to announce something early which they weren't planning to announce until later on.

Could this something be the next Metal Gear series? At the Games Developers Conference in August 2007, Hideo Kojima confirmed that "Metal Gear is like James Bond - it will never end". So it could easily be true.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Demo Probably Not Coming, Collector's Edition Possible

Today, on macho gaming forum NeoGAF, new information (sort of) surfaces about Konami's upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4.

Metal Gear Solid 4's Producer Ryan Payton warns us that we shouldn't get our hopes up for a demo to hit the PLAYSTATION Store.

"Considering how much we’ve changed since TGS/E for All, it would be a huge undertaking to create a new demo. Sorry guys."
To lighten the pain of not being able to test this potential system seller out, he speaks of the possibility of a collector's edition.
"On a brighter note, we’re working really hard to solidify plans for a limited edition SKU. Coordinating our ideas with Konami JP, US, and EU is a big challenge, considering the simultaneous worldwide launch, strict retail rules on packaging, etc."
Ryan's views on the game aren't to make it a killer app for the console, but to make it the best game it can be.
"Wish me luck in 2008 as I try to divert attention away from MGS4 being a killer app “weapon” against competitors in our industry, but rather focus on the game being a big step for the game industry as a whole. I hope MGS4 will prove to millions of people that games are to be celebrated, not spat on by politicians and mainstream media."

Ryan Payton: Why No Metal Gear Solid 4 Demo?

Matt Bruchovich of GameAlmighty caught up with Ryan Payton of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots at the E For All 2007 game conference.

Matt did a quick little Q&A with Ryan, and the first thing they shot at him was why there will be no PLAYSTATION Network demo.

Matt Butrovich: You recently said there would be no Playstation Network demo before the launch of the game, and that E For All would be the only opportunity for US gamers to try it out. Why is that?

Ryan Payton: Oh, that’s an easy question. The reason is because we’re showing the game off at E For All. We’re giving people basically a fifteen minute test of the game. You can get to the end of the demo in this version, but it’s not perfect. The game we’re working on right now in the studio, the retail version of the game is actually quite different. We’ve been tweeking the threat ring - when you go into alert mode, then caution mode, and then normal mode, that’s changed as well. The control scheme has changed a little bit. The menus have changed. There’s so many different things that if we put this game on the Playstation Store it would feel like a beta test. And we know that people would be breaking the game playing it over and over and over again and looking at how the AI’s not complete yet.

With that said, we want to bring the game out and let people play it in their own homes and play this demo, but we feel that it’s not a 100% representation of the retail version of the game. So as of right now there’s no plans. Could that change in the future? It could, and I know people are disappointed. But we feel it’s best for the game and for the gamer not to get an unfinished demo."

Metal Gear 4: No PLAYSTATION Store Demo

I guess we've been lied to. In the latest Kojima Productions podcast, they state that there are no plans to bring a demo of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to the PLAYSTATION Store prior to the game's launch.

Host Ryan Payton stated: "I can tell you, as of right now, we don't have any plans of uploading this demo on the PlayStation Store." And definitely, he added, no plans of "uploading [on PSN] next week." His statements were echoed by Konami's new flak master, Michael Shelling, adding "[E for All] is going to be your one chance to actually play it prior to it launching next year."

Metal Gear Solid 4: Over 200 Developers

In an interview with Gamasutra, Ryan Payton of Kojima Productions gives some information about the development process of Metal Gear Solid 4. Over two hundred people are currently on the development team for the game, making it one of the largest single teams working in one place on a single gaming project. This is a great thing for the game, showing much dedication, but if there are so many developers, why such a long wait?

Payton also hints at some DUALSHOCK 3 innovations being used in the game that "people are going to really dig." This is no surprise - Kojima has always been a big fan of using rumble imaginatively, ever since Metal Gear Solid 1.

Metal Gear Solid 4: No More Trailers

Believe it or not, we've seen a hefty load of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots trailers, nine to be exact. Thats excluding the gameplay videos (which matter the most) that we've seen.

Kojima Productions assistant producer Ryan Payton has told MTV Games' Stephen Totilo that their latest video, from this year's Tokyo Game Show (embedded above), "could be the last trailer [for the game]."

"The pressure is really on to finish work on the game, and we have decided not to be sidetracked by any more promotional work," he said. That doesn't rule out making more cinema once the game is completed, although.

Don't remember all the trailers? Let's refresh you. The trailers were shown three E3 Expos, three Tokyo Game Shows, two Leipzig Games Conventions and a Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Party.
