PLAYSTATION 3 Replaces Supercomputer Systems

The super computer usage of the PLAYSTATION 3 started with the immense success of the Folding@Home application released in the 1.60 update.

It showed how t he Cell Processor and the PLAYSTATION 3 can compute massive amounts of data for scientific & health research.

n astrophysicist recently linked eight PLAYSTATION 3 systems together and was able to compute the same amount of data as 200 supercomputers. After Gaurav Khanna created code optimized for the PLAYSTATION 3, Sony took attention and donated a few systems to his research.

"Basically, it's almost like a replacement," he told Wired. "I don't have to use that supercomputer anymore, which is a good thing." One PLAYSTATION 3 only costs $500, but one supercomputer can cost up to $5000. Thats a lot of cash. The cost of eight PLAYSTATION 3's is a far better deal than getting eight supercomputers.
