Looks like Sony is testing out it's in-game XMB work on it's games before they throw it all out at us. The today released High Velocity Bowling includes the ability to play a custom soundtrack.
To add to that, the TimeShift multiplayer demo that was released today includes in-game messaging as well. They've done this in games like Resistance: Fall of Man.
If they are able to do this so easily, why can't we just get our in-game XMB with all those features now? Perhaps for Christmas Sony?

In-game messaging, custom soundtracks, screenshots, these features have all been in the PS3 firmware for months, but they need to be enabled on a game-by-game basis. However they also have a large memory cost so developers typically don't bother with them. In recent firmware updates Sony have been reducing the memory requirements of the OS, so now developers have more memory available to them and they are thus more likely to implement these additional features.
