Sony Says PS3 Sales to Top 11 Million by End of Fiscal Year

In a newpaper interview, Kaz "Riiiidge Racer" Hirai tells Yomiuri Shimbun that the worldwide sales of the PLAYSTATION 3 are expected to reach 11 million by the end of this fiscal year.

The PS3 "is starting afresh as a console to play games with. Although pricing strategy is important, now we would like to put our strength in the number of software games," Hirai said.

Hirai told the Yomiuri he would like to see Sony's game division "escape as soon as possible from the red and return to the black in fiscal year 2008."

I stopped over at VG Chartz and looking at the numbers really puts things into perspective. It's actually quite upsetting to see the PS3 doing so poorly. I understand why the PSP isn't doing so well. There's no big compelling reason to pick one up unless you have a PS3 and would rather view content via Remote Play than bog down your Memory Stick with the same stuff.

The PS3 is WAY behind right now with only a little over 7 million systems while the 360 has double those numbers. Nintendo is sittin' pretty at little over 16 million and interestingly enough sales in the US are HUGE compared to Japan.

Week ending December 8th Nintendo sold almost 600,000 units compared to Sony's 160,000. The Wii is dominating. I guess I never wanted to admit it but the truth is in the spreadsheet.

Sony has a long road ahead and while I do believe it's the most versatile and capable system of the three it's going to take a miracle just to get close to Microsoft. I think going after Nintendo is useless at this point.

Truth be told Nintendo's Wii could be Nintendo's last system. And why not? Obviously no one is really concerned with the graphics.

I'll shut up now, I'm not making things any better with this commentary.
