PlayStation Eye Headtracking: No Gimmicks Needed

At the Game Developers Conference 2008, Sony Computer Entertainment showd off some of that head-tracking technology we saw a while back, which included a pair of glasses. When Sony showed it, all that was needed was the PlayStation Eye camera. Have a look in the video above, perhaps Sony can start implementing this into some PlayStation Eye games.

PLAYSTATION Eye Shows More Possibilities

If you've been wondering what can really be done with the PLAYSTATION Eye, these are the videos to watch. The video above shows a tech demo called Sketch Lander (which will hopefully be a game soon enough), where you draw a sketch, and you can turn it into a game using the abilities of the PLAYSTATION Eye.

The next one below is called Physics College, where it scans on your image, and it falls out of the paper on the screen. Maybe for usage as stickers? I really don't know.

The last video is called Full Tanks, where you scan in your own tank from a drawing, or object or such, and just battle it out on the battlefield, quite innovative thinking.

Europe: PLAYSTATION Eye Delayed to December?

Originally pegged for a release date of November 9th many were expecting the PlayStation Eye to be in their hands this Friday. But today UK retailer Play.com changed the release date of the product to the 7th December and Amazon changed it to the 14th December.
The biggest gaming retailer in the UK GAME still do not have the product listed, which begs the question will it be making its way to british shores before christmas?

The PLAYSTATION Eye was originally planned for the release date of November 9, 2007 in Europe. Today, UK retailer PLAY revealed the release date to be the 7th of December and Amazon UK also changed theirs to the 14th of December.

Hopefully, the PLAYSTATION Eye will be in the hands of Europeans before Christmas so they can share the family fun with all the visitors.

Tori Emaki & Mezmerize: Two New PlayStation Network Games

Sony has been working hard lately on games that use the PlayStation Eye to function. Here we have two new upcoming games to show you, Tori Emaki, and Mesmerize.

First, Tori Emaki. Using an art style reminiscent of the beautiful Okami, Tori Emaki allows the player to gently guide a group of crows over a papery Japanese landscape. It’s one of the most tranquil experiences we've had in a long time. Wherever you point on-screen the crows will follow, delicately weaving their way around cherry blossom trees and drifting peacefully in and out of focus on an invisible breeze...

It's, like, beautiful, man, and the perfect partner for wasted weekends. Lift your heavy lids and - slowly - point your eyes at the movie below to absorb the vibe.

Second, Mesmerize. Mesmerize calls for a tad more physical exertion than Tori Emaki, but rest assured space cadets - energy expenditure is still kept to a bare minimum. This interactive experience features 10 different settings, each one providing its own visual stimuli triggered by gentle gesticulation. Most ambient and easily engaging for those post-club sessions.

As a package, Mesmerize looks like being an extremely laidback affair with no goals or point scoring to oppress and totally bum the vibe. Turn on, tune in and watch the Mesmerize movie below. Remember - free your mind and your hands will follow.

The Eye of Judgment Plastic Pack

Don't you love using scissors? Anyway, all jokes aside right now. This is the Eye of Judgment plastic pack, it comes loaded with The Eye of Judgment PlayStation 3 game, the PlayStation Eye camera, a starter deck, and a booster pack.

I'm excited for this game and am looking forward to playing online. Knowing my card game skills, I will probably lose every match.

Kotaku Receives The Eye of Judgment

You know how Kotaku is one of the big blogs and gets a bunch of free stuff from Sony and other companies (yes, I'm jealous), so today they received The Eye of Judgment, along with that, a PlayStation Eye:

The stand comes packed away in a smallish plastic bag and was fairly easy to put together, though it's not the sort of thing you're really going to way to take apart and put together over and over again. I think I would have preferred if they had made it collapsible instead of takeapartable.

The camera looks and feels pretty solid. It has a four microphone array. You can twist the lens, switching between a red and blue selection on the front of the lens. I'm not positive what this does but think it's either for switching between auto and manual focus or, more likely, between distance and close-up focus. If you couldn't tell, none of this stuff came with directions.

Sounds pretty good, I can't wait to get my hands on one. View pictures at the link.

IGN: PlayStation Eye vs Eye Toy Quality

Straight from IGN.

In practice, the PlayStation Eye works almost exactly the same as the EyeToy does with regards to its settings and whatnot that you'll find on the PS3. In the Accessory Settings under Camera Device Settings, you can view a preview window of what the camera sees and can change between either 50hz or 60hz display settings (to get rid of crawling lines on screens in the background). As of right now there are no options for capturing snapshots or videos directly to the system, but hopefully Sony will add at least rudimentary functionality for this with a future firmware update.

Whereas the EyeToy functions only as a camera, the PlayStation Eye has a built-in microphone to pick up your voice or whatever gross sound effects you wish to send your friends' way. Our voices seemed to get picked up and come through pretty clearly when testing this via a chat session, negating the need for wearing a headset while playing online. Of course, you'll then need to pipe voices through your TV when not wearing a headset, but the experience is much more comfortable.

Aside from its microphone, the PlayStation Eye bests the EyeToy in that it has two levels of zoom and utilizes an auto-focus feature so that you don't have to manually twist the lens in order to get a clear picture. While the two zoom levels is nice, the auto-focus makes setup a whole lot easier. As well, it resulted in a clear picture throughout its image, whereas some background stuff seen on the EyeToy may have come out blurry. For those of you with questionable posters on your wall, this might be a bad thing. The PlayStation Eye also refreshes its image noticeably faster than the EyeToy, matching the silky image of a video camera.

While all that is good news, the actual image quality isn't quite as good as we'd hoped. As you can see in some of the images below, the color levels of the EyeToy often looked more natural and it seems to deal with darkness better than the PlayStation Eye. The Eye's images often appeared to be greener than they should be, and there's a lot of graininess in dark scenes.

Eye of Judgement will Retail for $60 w/ PlayStation Eye

Seeing how advanced the PlayStation Eye is, most people think it would cost double your dimes. Fear not, because the upcoming Eye of Judgement, which includes the camera peripheral, is listed for the same price as a regular PS3 retail game: only $60. A steal price.

PlayStation Eye Game: Trials of Topoq Revealed in London

While PS3Fanboy was at Sony's 3Rooms Brand in London, they noticed a new game attached to a PlayStation Eye. It is called Trials of Topoq. Here is how PS3Fanboy described the game:

The game requires you to move the ball around the different layers of each castle, breaking open cages as you go. Each level has a different task, including getting to the end within a time limit and breaking a certain amount of cages before reaching the finish line. Crossbows can be found around the levels which, when the ball is rolled into it, will shoot you to a hidden area of the level.

The ball is not moved via the analogue stick, nor the SIXAXIS. Instead, the floor of the castle shows an image of what the PlayStation Eye can see. By moving your arms (or any other part of you, really) you affect the height of the floor temporarily. The idea is to create slopes to guide the ball around and collect the items (or "smash the cages" as the game calls it) whilst making yourself look like a prat in the process.
Seems like a promising new PlayStation 3 game. We can only wait till the future for more screenshots.
