Phil Harrison: You Can't Get Wii's Whole Audience

During the "Lunc with the Luminaries" session at GDC 2008, Phil Harrison, Son's president of worldwide studios, told EA Blueprint's Neil Young that making Wii games may not be as viable as third-party publishers think.

Phil Harrison stated "Your addressable market is only 40% of the installed base."

You can't get them all.

GDC 2008: Valve Confirms No Left 4 Dead for PLAYSTATION 3, Rather Develop for Wii

Valve's Doug Lombardi today confirmed that the highly anticipated zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead, will not be arriving on the PLAYSTATION 3. They said that the game will only be arriving on the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.

“We were really crappy at bringing games to consoles,” he said. He said that it took time for the company to get into the console generation. They now develop games simultaneously for the Xbox 360 and PC, but have limited interest in developing games for the PLAYSTATION 3.

“EA wanted to do Orange Box on PS3 and they handled it,” said Lombardi. “Left 4 Dead isn’t coming out on PS3 because we’ve not had that call. If the phone rang we would have the conversation, certainly, but it hasn’t happened.”

Lombardi also revealed that, “If Valve were to develop in-house for another format, it would be the Wii. It’s growing, there’s already a huge user-base, and it’s fun. Source is really scaleable. We can do that.”

I guess Sony Computer Entertainment would take that as a big insult. I don't know why Valve hates the PLAYSTATION 3 so much. They are a great company and they should release their titles on all consoles.

PLAYSTATION 3 Outsells Xbox 360, Almost Ties Wii In January 2008

Well, the first month of 2008 is already proving to be "Sony's 2008" as the PLAYSTATION 3 beat the Xbox 360 in sales, and almost matched the Nintendo Wii. The sales list below.

- NintendoWii: 274K
- PLAYSTATION 3: 269K
- PS2: 264K
- Nintendo DS Lite: 251K
- Xbox 360: 230K
- PSP: 230K
Jack Tretton had a little something to say about the great sales the PLAYSTATION 3 is experiencing.

"Coming off a great holiday sales season we see strong momentum behind PS3 in 2008, and feel confident about the year ahead. We have an exceptionally diverse lineup of exclusive games, from Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resistance 2 to more mainstream games such as LittleBigPlanet and SingStar. Beyond that, we have Blu-ray emerging as the de facto high def standard, the developer community is hitting their stride, consumers are recognizing the tremendous value and innovative services such as PlayStation Home are all in the works, so this is definitely shaping up to be a breakthrough year for us." - Jack Tretton, CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America

Square Enix's Main Platforms: PS3, Wii, DS

In a new interview with Square Enix, they speak about their main platforms for making games. They like the success of the Wii and they believe that the PLAYSTATION 3 and the Wii will coexist between boths strategies. Read below.

- If there is a merrit cooperating with Microsoft we will do this. We might give some projects to separate studios and make games for the X360.

- The Main Platforms for Square Enix are the Nintendo Platforms and PS3. The Lionshare of the Developers and our infrastructure as well as our capital is for NDS, Wii and PS3 and this is not going to change.

- We are astonished by Wiis success and the nintendo dominance. We thought that the PS3 and the Wii will coexist due to the difference between both strategies, but in the end the users will decide which platform we develop on. The SCE Platforms at this point are a bit of a challenge.

- We think we can do much on the Wii. I talked to Iwata to exploit many possibilities and cheer on him.

PLAYSTATION 3 Finally Ladders The Wii In Japan

According to Enterbrain, the PLAYSTATION 3 climbed to the top in the monthly sales over the Nintendo Wii for the month of November, pushing 183,217 consoles to Nintendo's 159,193.

This is the first time that the PLAYSTATION 3 has come out on top since it's launch in November 2006. Could Sony be returning to it's former glory? Analyst Hiroshi Kamide of KBC Securities isn't convinced.

"It's nice to see the system selling much better than six months ago. But is it a sustainable trend? Is it going to really escalate from here? I'm not so sure."
I'm hoping it keeps up as well, I mean I like the Nintendo Wii as well, but the PLAYSTATION 3 is a great system that isn't getting the sales it deserves. But in my opinion, a new beginning is starting.

EA Makes More Money On Mobile Than the PSP & PLAYSTATION 3

Electronic Arts managed to make a hefty US$ 640 million in revenue. However, there is something strange in the breakdown of EA's sales. Take a look for yourself below.

- Xbox 360 - US$ 218 million
- PlayStation 2 - US4 73 million
- Nintendo Wii - US$ 59 million
- Nintendo DS - US$ 47 million
- Mobile - US$ 37 million
- PSP - US$ 21 million
- PLAYSTATION 3 - US$ 17 million
If you cannot see it, the PLAYSTATION 3 only made US $17 million and the PSP US $21 million. Although, the mobile device made US $37 million, US $2 million less than both Sony systems added together.

Electronic Arts have been putting together some crappy PLAYSTATION 3 ports lately, and thats why you see the low numbers. We're usually not one to criticize anything other than the PLAYSTATION Network, but we're trying to figure out whether Electronic Arts plain doesn't like the console, or if there is some inside deal.

Who knows.

Sony Outsells Wii In Japan Again

It appears that the success of the newly released 40GB PLAYSTATION 3 is continuing in Japan as it has outsold the Nintendo Wii for the second week in a row in Japan.

While the total number dipped to 53,000 systems, it still outsold its foe by more than 20,000 units as the Nintendo Wii only managed 36,000 sales.

Sony seems to be having a major turnaround for their console, we can only hope that these sales continue to soar.

Monster Hunter 3 Not Coming to PLAYSTATION 3?

Today, the PLAYSTATION 3 has sadly lost a very good exclusive.

Monster Hunter 3 was originally planned as a PLAYSTATION 3 exclusive title. Today, Capcom announced that the title will be released as a Nintendo Wii only title.

They explain to Games Industry. Capcom’s managing corporate officer Katsuhiko Ichii told Thompson Financial that:

“Due to high development cost of titles for PS3, we have decided to switch the platform to which we release our Monster Hunter 3 title.”
I'm very disappointed to see this as Monster Hunter is a great franchise and would of done very well on the PLAYSTATION 3.

onAXIS: Console Wars, Childish?

Go to any gaming forum, go to say the PLAYSTATION 3 section of the forum, check the first page. Do you see anything not so ordinary? Maybe like a topic about the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii? Open the topic. Do you see something like:
"PSTREE GRAFX SUX 360 PWNS FOR LIFE, I BOUGHT A PSTREE N TRADED THAT SHIT IN FRsT DaY DATS HOW MUCH IT SUKED!"
Now, you see, thats not the only thing that is childish. Whats even more childish is what the users of this PLAYSTATION 3 forum answer back, do you see anything like:
"go stick that 360 controller up your *doink* and let it vibrate you newb, the ps3 is much better any day any time"
What I really don't understand is, did you get insulted personally when you read those comments in the first place?

Sure, it's fine to like one console and not like the other, but why go around and talk trash about it? Just to annoy other people? Sure it's fun to do that, but in real life, with random people on the streets.

At onAXIS, were not just fond of the PLAYSTAION 3, but fond of the other consoles as well. When we have versus posts, we are not having them battle, we are comparing the features of the two so hopefully those consoles can learn off eachother and apply the missing features.

There are people out there, like the people above, there called fanboys. Some people hate them, some people are them, some people like to ignore them. There is no problem with fanboys at all, but when they act like the ones above, then thats when it becomes a problem.

If we had magical powers and could make all these bad fanboys act like nice little minions, we would. But it seems that big guns upstairs limited our powers to at the highest, do stage magic. But do yourself a favor, next time you see a post like that of above, don't respond, let it sink.
